Rugby chiefs urged to end contact training to reduce motor neurone disease risk

Rugby authorities have been told they should look to eliminate contact training and reduce the global calendar after a study in the UK revealed evidence of considerably increased risk of motor neurone disease among former players.

A study led by the University of Glasgow looking at former Scotland internationals – from the amateur era and later professional players – found ex-players had more than twice the risk of a neurodegenerative disease, and a 15 times higher risk of a motor neurone disease diagnosis.

Consultant neuropathologist Professor Willie Stewart, who led the research, said it raised immediate questions for rugby authorities to mitigate the risks.

“I am genuinely concerned about what is happening in the modern game, and that if, in 20 years’ time, we repeat this study we would see something even more concerning” Prof Stewart said.

“Rugby has talked a lot and done a lot about head injury management and whether it can reduce head injury during (training). Those conversations have gone on a while and the pace of progress is pretty slow.

“This should be a stimulus to them to pick up their heels to make some pretty dramatic changes as quickly as possible to try and reduce risk. You may want to avoid taking on the risk if you love live betting since you may not win if the players hurt themselves.

“Instead of talking about extending seasons and introducing new competitions and global seasons they should be talking about restricting it as much as possible, cutting back on the amount of rugby we’re seeing, and getting rid of as much training as possible.

“Things like that have to be addressed pretty rapidly.”

The study, published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, compared health outcomes among 412 male Scottish former internationals and more than 1,200 matched individuals from the general population.

Novak Djokovic overcomes friend Vasek Pospisil to reach Tel Aviv semi-finals

Novak Djokovic defeated his good friend Vasek Pospisil to reach the semi-finals of the Tel Aviv Watergen Open.

Having eased past Pablo Andujar on Thursday in his first ATP Tour match for more than four months, Djokovic had a tougher time of things against Canadian Pospisil before sealing a 7-6 (5) 6-3 triumph.

The pair teamed up to found the Professional Tennis Players Association three years ago, and 149th-ranked Pospisil did not face a break point in the opening set.

He then fought back from 5-1 down in the tie-break with four points in a row before Djokovic took it, while in the second set the Serbian won the final three games after seeing an early break slip away.

It was a great, positive win,” Djokovic said in his on-court interview. “Vasek is one of my best friends on the tour.

“We have known each other for many years. It is never easy playing someone you respect so much and like so much, but we are both professionals and wanted to win the match and you can see that.

“I think the level of tennis was really high. Especially towards the end of the first set and the second set. Credit to him for fighting. Great to see him back.”

In the last four, Djokovic will take on Russian Roman Safiullin, while the other semi-final pits second seed Marin Cilic against France’s Constant Lestienne. If you want to make your watching experience more interesting, try live betting on these matches to score a win!

There was a major shock at the Korea Open, where Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka knocked out top seed Casper Ruud 6-2 3-6 6-2.

The US Open finalist’s defeat means Rafael Nadal will overtake him as world number two next week.

Second seed Cameron Norrie withdrew ahead of his quarter-final against Jenson Brooksby through illness. The American will take on Denis Shapovalov in the last four, while Nishioka meets lucky loser Aleksandar Kovacevic, who is having the best week of his career.

MARK ALLEN LEADS MARK SELBY IN QUARTER-FINALS AFTER JUDD TRUMP CRASHES OUT

Mark Selby leads the billing for the afternoon session at the British Open on Friday. World No. 2 Judd Trump was the latest leading name to crash out of the event on Thursday, but Selby faces a tough task against Trump’s conqueror Mark Allen, the 2018 Masters winner. The draw is even more wide open following the early exits of Class of ’92 icons Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins and Mark Williams.

RECAP: ALLEN DOWNS TRUMP IN SHOCK

Mark Allen set up a quarter-final meeting with Mark Selby at the 2022 British Open, squeezing out Judd Trump 4-3 in a tension-filled third round meeting.
A cagey encounter between two familiar foes went the distance late into the Milton Keynes evening, with neither able to consistently produce consistently accurate offensive or defensive play.
It was Trump who appeared to be clicking into gear late on, registering the only century of the match to force a decider.

But Allen, just about, held his nerve to deny Trump a chance at usurping Ronnie O’Sullivan at the top of the world rankings.
“I made it harder for myself than I needed it to be,” Allen told ITV after securing victory. “I let Judd back into the match and it looked like he might go on and win the decider like to players do but I just hung in there and made a decent 55.
“It was a tricky one. But I’m very happy to get over the line.
“Any win over Judd is a good one and I’m just lucky that he wasn’t quite at his best because apparently when he is at his best he beats me ten out of ten.”

RB LEIPZIG FORWARD CHRISTOPHER NKUNKU COMPLETES CHELSEA MEDICAL AHEAD OF £52.8M TRANSFER

RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku has already had a Chelsea medical with a view to a move next year, while Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar may also arrive at Stamford Bridge as his contract runs down. Elsewhere, Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves could sign for Barcelona, and Real Madrid were not Erling Haaland’s first or second choice.

NKUNKU COMPLETES CHELSEA MEDICAL

The Daily Mail reports that RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku has already undergone a medical with Chelsea doctors present, in Frankfurt earlier this year. The 24-year-old has a £52.8 million release clause, which the paper does not believe can be negotiated. Chelsea sold Timo Werner back to the club this summer and the Frenchman had been seen as a potential replacement.

Chelsea has a great run of games in the next few weeks so betting live on their triumphs is a must-do.

Érchontai exelíxeis me Mantsíni ston Ári

Andy Murray frustrated by Britain’s Davis Cup exit at hands of Netherlands

A downcast Andy Murray admitted he does not know how many more Davis Cup chances he has left after Britain crashed out of the competition with defeat by the Netherlands in Glasgow.

A loss to the USA on Wednesday had left Britain needing to beat the Dutch and probably Kazakhstan as well, but Sunday’s contest at the Emirates Arena will now be a meaningless match after Murray and Joe Salisbury again came out on the wrong side of a dramatic deciding doubles rubber.

Murray and Salisbury saved a match point in the second set against Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop to keep their hopes alive, but the Scot then netted a return on a break point at 3-3 in the deciding set and the British pair lost the last 10 points in a 7-6 (0) 6-7 (6) 6-3 defeat. Also defeated were the fans that placed their bets while betting live on the UK team.
