Mangala i zvanično novi igrač Notingem Foresta

Rory McIlroy sees last week’s US PGA Championship as ‘one that got away’

Rory McIlroy admits last week’s US PGA Championship is “one that got away” as his major drought continues.

McIlroy held a one-shot lead after an opening five-under-par 65 at Southern Hills, with Justin Thomas eventually defeating Will Zalatoris in a play-off after they finished tied on five under.

The four-time major winner was also four under after the first five holes of the final round, but bogeyed the sixth and then made 10 straight pars before dropping another shot on the 17th, a driveable par four.

I just have to stay as patient as possible. I know that if I keep playing the golf that I’m playing the chances are going to present themselves and I’m going to give myself a few more chances this year, not just to win majors but to win golf tournaments in general.”

McIlroy, who did not speak to reporters after the third or fourth rounds at Southern Hills, will return to action in next week’s Memorial Tournament before defending his title in the RBC Canadian Open ahead of the US Open.

The 33-year-old will also contest the Travelers Championship and the JP McManus Pro-Am before missing the Irish Open to prepare for The 150th Open at St Andrews. Don’t forget to follow all his games on matches today.

Most lucrative prize in world football – Play-off winner to get at least £170m

Victory in Sunday’s Sky Bet Championship final could be worth at least £170 million to either Huddersfield or Nottingham Forest as they battle for “the most lucrative prize in world football”.

Analysis carried out by Deloitte’s sports business group suggests future revenues for the victors could rise to in excess of £300 million over the next five seasons if they manage to retain their new-found Premier League status at the first attempt, something only five of the last 10 winners have achieved.

The projected figures highlight the disparity between finances between English football’s top two divisions, the subject of recommendations for fairer distribution in Conservative MP Tracey Crouch’s fan-led review of the game in this country and a major focus for English Football League chairman Rick Parry.

Tim Bridge, a director in the sports business group, said: “Wembley this weekend is host to the match with the most lucrative prize in world football.

“Following a fiercely contested season, the winner of Sunday’s Championship play-off final will walk off the pitch having secured additional future revenues of at least £170million.” If I won that kind of money, I wouldn’t leave the casino for a month, trying to turn it around and make even more!

“Promoted teams benefit from considerable financial gains which can deliver new player signings, stadium improvements and more.

“However, whilst a narrow majority of clubs promoted to the Premier League over the past decade survived their first season, half of the play-off final winners have not.

“Hence the winner of Sunday’s game will face the challenge of maintaining the excitement of fans, as well as balancing financial stability in the coming months.

“This Sunday’s game holds the key to re-entering the top-flight of English football, but the harder battle is to come: staying in it.”

Deloitte’s assessment is based on the estimated increase in commercial and matchday revenues for the play-off final winners over three seasons of around £90million, largely due to income from the Premier League broadcast deal, and the total parachute payments – Parry has argued for their abolition – to which they would be entitled should they be relegated immediately, another £80million.

That second figure is perhaps particularly relevant with QPR, Norwich, Hull and Fulham twice having enjoyed only single-season stays in the top flight in the last decade.

Huddersfield, who finished third in the Championship this season, dispensed with Luton in the semi-finals, while fourth-placed Forest got the better of Sheffield United.

Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate returns to Paris planning to conquer the world

Ibrahima Konate left Paris as a 14-year-old with a dream of just being a professional footballer but he returns to his home city for the Champions League final aiming to become the best defender in the world.

The Frenchman grew up in the city’s 11th arrondissement within five miles of the Stade de France, where Saturday’s showpiece against Real Madrid takes place.

He played street football in the cages interspersed among the flats and apartment buildings but did not actually get to the national stadium until he had left for Sochaux as a 14-year-old and returned to watch the club’s under-18s win the Coupe Gambadella in 2015.

If you like online betting you won’t make a mistake if you bet on him!

I knew I was coming into a big club that wants to win titles but this season is exceptional, I say that everyday… I am living it every day and it is just remarkable.

“I think it’s (the final) definitely going to be the best moment of my life – I don’t have any children yet so I can’t be sure – but I think it will be the greatest moment.

The Champions League final. In Paris. My home. If I tried I couldn’t have dreamt of anything better.”
