West Ham: Major Jarrod Bowen injury update

West Ham attacker Jarrod Bowen could still return after the international break, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Reports emerged on Monday morning that the Hammers forward might be facing a number of weeks on the sidelines and could be in danger of missing the Europa League games against Lyon next month.

What’s the latest news involving Bowen?
West Ham’s top goal scorer has missed the last four games with a foot injury sustained against Liverpool earlier this month, although the club were optimistic that Bowen hadn’t suffered any significant damage.

However, The Athletic believe that Bowen’s injury is worse than first feared, which means he’s now in a race to be fit to face the Ligue 1 outfit, with the games taking place at the London Stadium on 7 April before the Hammers travel to France the following week.

Should Bowen remain sidelined for the European ties, he could also sit out the Premier League games against Everton and Brentford next month, which might both prove key in West Ham’s fight to secure a top six finish.

However, Jones remains optimistic that Bowen could be fit after the international break.

How have West Ham performed without Bowen?

West Ham have had a mixed spell without their talisman in the side, although it’s generally been a productive period since he pulled up at Anfield.

They lost the first leg against Sevilla but managed to win the second leg 2-0 to ensure they advanced to the quarter finals and set up the date with Lyon.

Domestically, the Hammers edged past Aston Villa last weekend, but put in one of their worst performances of the season to lose 3-1 at Tottenham on Sunday, although given it came less than 72 hours after the Sevilla game, it was half expected.

It’s already proven a challenging time since Bowen got injured, but if the likes of Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio step up, West Ham should be able to cope in his absence.

One thing is certain – Unless Jarrod Bowen comes back in time to play in West Ham’s Europa League clash vs. Lyon, football betting on the London club to go through won’t be very smart decision.

Rafael Nadal beaten by Taylor Fritz in Indian Wells final

Taylor Fritz (left) and Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal says he suffered from breathing difficulties during his straight sets defeat by Taylor Fritz in the Indian Wells final.

Nadal, 35, appeared out of sorts and quickly found himself 4-0 down before leaving the court for treatment.

He looked more comfortable on his return but struggled to break down a determined Taylor Fritz who won 6-3 7-6 (7-5).

“It’s tough for me to breathe. When I try to breathe, it’s painful and it’s very uncomfortable,” said Nadal.

“When I’m breathing, when I’m moving it’s like a needle all the time inside here. I get dizzy a little bit because it’s painful. It’s a kind of pain that limits me a lot. It’s not only about pain, I don’t feel very well because it affects my breathing.”

Spaniard Nadal, who claimed victory at the Australian Open earlier this year, had won his previous 20 matches in 2022.

But he made 34 unforced errors in the match compared to 22 from Fritz.

“Honestly I am sad because of the way I was not able to compete,” he added. “The thing that worries me now, it’s about what’s going on there, what I have to do now to recover and how long it’s going to take.”

Fritz’s win meant he became the first American to win at Indian Wells since Andre Agassi in 2001.

He saved two break points at 5-5 in the second set before winning a tie-break to secure his second ATP Tour title – and first Masters 1000 victory.

There were concerns about his fitness after he suffered an ankle injury in the semi-final win against Andrey Rublev but he showed no ill-effects during his win.

“I can’t even begin to describe how ridiculous it is to play, how I could play today, I’ve never experienced worse pain like I did before the match,” said 24-year-old Fritz.

“I took a couple of steps and screamed. I was trying to act tough and we did a lot of work leading up to the match.

“I was really upset, basically almost crying because I thought I was going to have to pull out.

“I went through a rollercoaster of emotion and all of a sudden being really happy thinking maybe I can play, but it didn’t affect me at all.

“This is one of those childhood dreams you never even think will come true.”

Mykolenko hits out at Russia players

Everton's Vitaliy Mykolenko during in action for Everton in the FA Cup.

Everton’s Ukrainian defender Mykolenko, who the Toffees have pledged to continue supporting in their latest statement, hit out at Russia’s players for their silence over the invasion of Ukraine in an expletive statement.

The defender, who joined Everton from Dynamo Kyiv in January, embraced his international colleague Oleksandr Zinchenko before Manchester City’s clash with Everton on Saturday.

But while support from the football world for Ukraine has been widespread, Cherkasy-born Mykolenko is furious that has not extended to players from the Russia football team.

In a post full of expletives on Instagram in his native language, the 22-year-old called out Russia captain Artem Dzyuba and said the players would “never be forgiven” for their actions.

The post on his Instagram story said: “Whilst you b***h and your c**p footballers are silent, @artem.dzyuba, civilians are being killed in Ukraine. You and most importantly your children will be locked in your s***hole for your whole life. And I am sincerely happy for it. You will never be forgiven.”

Mykolenko’s post came the day after FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia from all competitions, just weeks before they were due to face Poland in a World Cup play-off semi-final.

Russian Football Union to appeal UEFA and FIFA’s decisions to ban their national teams to CAS

Russia’s national teams have been banned from international competitions by FIFA and UEFA following the country’s invasion of Ukraine; however, the Russian Football Union says it will appeal the bans to the Court of Arbitration for Sport

Court of Arbitration for Sport

The Russian Football Union says it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decisions by FIFA and UEFA to bar Russian national teams from international competitions over the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The union said in a statement it would file one lawsuit against the two governing bodies to demand that Russian men’s and women’s national teams be allowed to compete, including in qualifying for this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

FIFA initially stated that Russia would be able to continue to play under the ‘Football Union or Russia’ name, and without their flag or anthem being present at matches.

But world football’s governing body then released a joint statement with UEFA on Monday announcing Russia’s national teams, plus its clubs, were banned from all competitions.

The statement from the governing bodies read: “Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.

“These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.

“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”

Russia were due to play Poland in a World Cup qualifier later this month, with the winner of the tie playing either Sweden or the Czech Republic for a place at the finals in Qatar, but all three nations refused to face them.

A number of European football associations, including those of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, also stated they would not face Russian sides, and we are betting that this is only the beginning.

Spartak Moscow, Russia’s only remaining team in European club competition, were also thrown out of the Europa League.

Švajcarski milijarder blizak Bajdenu kupuje Čelsi od Abramoviča?

Foto: Shutterstock

Man City VAR controversy: PGMOL sorry after Lampard fumes

Everton have received an apology from the Premier League’s head of referees, Mike Riley, after the failure to award an injury time penalty against Manchester City on Saturday.

Everton were trailing the league leaders 1-0 when Rodrigo handled the ball inside the area. Match referee Paul Tierney was unsighted and the VAR, Chris Kavanagh, decided there was insufficient evidence to show the ball had hit the City midfielder on the arm.

The decision robbed Everton of the chance to equalise from the spot and claim a vital point in their battle against relegation.

Riley, the general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), which oversees all refereeing in England, personally called Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and manager Frank Lampard to apologise and admit a mistake had been made by the VAR.

Lampard, who replaced Rafa Benitez as Everton manager in January, was furious after the game with the defeat leaving his new club just one point above the drop zone.

“There is no doubt, there is no probably to it,” Lampard said after the game. “The decision is incredible, incredible, and that loses us the opportunity to get what we deserved.

“That’s a VAR call. That’s Chris Kavanagh, I spoke to the referee and they know it is a penalty, the question is that is it offside and it wasn’t.

“That’s the reason we have VAR. It wouldn’t have needed more than five seconds to know it was a penalty. He [Kavanagh] should have either told the referee to give it or told him to go look at it.

“We’ve lost a point because of a professional who cannot do his job right. You start searching for whys and I can’t think why. It is so incompetent to get it wrong.

“Pep [Guardiola] will know, Everton fans will know, Man City fans will know, it was the clearest penalty you could give: arm is out — great, below the sleeve — great, I was waiting for the penalty.

“Incompetence at best, at worst who knows? I’ll wait for the statement or apology they do when things are wrong but it will mean nothing.”

This decision did not only affect online betting, but there is a chance that it will have a great impact on the eventual placement that would determine the winner of the Premier League.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s plan for club looked into by charity regulator

Roman Abramovich’s attempt to shift the “stewardship and care” of Chelsea to the Premier League club’s foundation has sparked the trustees to report the move to the British body overseeing charities.

The unexpected announcement from the Chelsea owner, which lacked full clarity, was issued on Saturday following calls for him to be targeted by British sanctions regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and to sell the club.

The Charity Commission, which regulates the Chelsea Foundation, has received a “serious incident report” from its trustees amid concerns about how Abramovich’s plan can be enacted.

The foundation’s chairman is Bruce Buck, who has also chaired Chelsea for most of the 19 years the Russian oligarch has owned the west London club. Beyond women’s team manager Emma Hayes and director of finance Paul Ramos, the trustees with more separation from the club are British Olympic Association chairman Hugh Robertson, lawyer John Devine and anti-discrimination leader Piara Powar, the executive director of the FARE network.

The Charity Commission is seeking further information from them about the running of the club and the foundation.

“We have contacted the charity seeking information,” the commission said, “and, in line with our guidance, the charity has also made a report to the commission. We cannot comment further at this time.”

Abramovich has provided no indication that he is going to sell Chelsea, nor what exactly it means to be giving “stewardship and care” of the club to trustees who he said are “in the best position to look after the interests of the club, players, staff, and fans.”

The trustees have not publicly accepted Abramovich’s plan. Chelsea itself have also issued no comment, beyond remarks from manager Thomas Tuchel on Sunday that indicated little difference to the running of the club led by director Marina Granovskaia, a long-standing associate of Abramovich, and technical director Petr Cech, the former goalkeeper.

Tuchel was left to face more questions on the subject at a Tuesday news conference to preview the club’s FA Cup fifth round tie at Luton.

Asked about what he could tell supporters about the future of Chelsea’s ownership, Tuchel said: “I am not so sure if I am the person to give the message to the fans, anything else but sporting [ones].

“We try to be calm here and we are calm in the centre of a storm, or of some noise around us that we cannot control and we are also not responsible for it. In the end, it is best to stay calm and focus on what we love and what we do. This is sports and I think we have a right to focus on sports. The players have a right to be focused on it. This is what we can tell the fans and I think this is what the fans saw on Sunday [at the Carabao Cup Final against Liverpool].”

Facing further questions about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Tuchel continued to denounce the situation before eventually opting not to speak further on the subject, interrupting a question about Abramovich’s possible influence in the region by saying: “Listen, you have to stop, I’m not a politician. You have to stop, honestly. I can only repeat it and I even feel bad to repeat it because I never experienced war.

“So even to talk about it, I feel bad because I am very privileged. I sit here in peace and I do the best I can but you have to stop asking me these questions. I have no answers for you.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was challenged about Abramovich during a visit to Poland on Tuesday.

“You are talking about more sanctions prime minister, but Roman Abramovich is not sanctioned, he’s in London, his children are not in the bombardments, his children are there in London.” executive director of the Anti-Corruption Action Centre, a Ukrainian civil society organization, Daria Kaleniuk said.

There was no specific response by Johnson, but we are betting that he has a directive he has to follow.

Abramovich has yet to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin for launching the invasion of Ukraine.

“Every right thinking person should denounce what Putin has done,” British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab said when asked about Abramovich.
